The mideast is amazing and wonderful, not only because of the light, but also because of the friendliness and charm of almost all the people one meets. Syria is especially exciting, and the absense of crowds of tourists adds to the pleasure. From a photographic point of view, the amazing light, and the chance to make photographs that can incorporate the almost timeless quality of places that have been lived in, overrun by conquests, and remain lived in today provided an opportunity to create images that suggest what I like to suggest - that pictures do more than register a moment but also have a musical quality. That is, that as in music, any phrase is perceived as part of a process in which what came before and might follow is present in the now. |
